Eclectic Prawn -  Dumbo Gets Mad

Here’s a cool song from a new Italian band called Dumbo Gets Mad, apparently named after the Pink Elephants on Parade scene from the Disney classic.

Picture the shrimp of the title chilling on a Vespa and sharing a cigarette with Brigitte Bardot. It’s kinda like that. (And, yes, the song really is about a hip crustacean.) Dumbo’s girlfriend Carly croons and the beat bobs on a gentle wave.

Then the guitars and organs kick in like a seizure for about a minute, before it all smooths out again like a glassy sea.  With male/female vocals, “Eclectic Prawn” runs hot and cold on you in the most seductive way. It’s easily the most soulful track about getting down with sea creatures since “Octopus’s Garden.”

A short video of a girls longboard crew in Madrid by Juan Rayos. Pretty. Check out some of his other videos here.

A short (2.75 min.) documentary about Shinya Kimura, a motorcycle designer and originator of so called “zero-style” custom bikes. Looks like fun.

Eadweard Muybridge Biopic?

Awesome Beard

Apparently there’s an Eadweard Muybridge biopic in the works. I can’t think of a better subject. If you’re not familiar with his life or works, here are just a few interesting facts:

  • He was a pioneering photographer known for his motion studies of humans and animals.
  • He changed his name several times in his life, and used the pseudonym “Helios” on many of his photographic works.
  • He committed “justifiable homicide.” (found out his wife cheated, went up to the man’s door, said “Good evening, Major, my name is Muybridge and here is the answer to the letter you sent my wife,” then shot the man dead. He was later acquitted.)
  • He created a system to project motion pictures that predated the film strip.
  • He received severe head injuries in a stagecoach accident.
  • He helped pioneer the idea of artists working in a series and using grids, both important ideas in modern art.

Coolest couple, funny video.

This app is pretty amazing. I remember when I first got the internet (I think in middle school), which I was amazed by. Now we have things like phones with real-time visual translation, hd video, and seamless videoconferencing.

Developer description:

Word Lens instantly translates printed words from one language to another using the video camera on your iPhone. No network delay, no roaming fees, and no reception problems.

Word Lens is a dictionary — evolved. It looks up words for you, and shows them in context. You can use Word Lens on your vacations to translate restaurant menus, street signs, and other things that have clearly printed words.

So an IBM computer named “Watson” will face Ken Jennings and Brad Rutter on Jeopardy for $1 million in February. My money’s on Watson.

Aloe Blacc does an interesting soul version of VU’s “Femme Fatale.” I think it sounds nice, pretty video too.
